How much energy does a furnace fan use?
My fiance and I live in a two story house, and it doesn’t heat/cool evenly between the two stories. In the summer and winter the upstairs is always hot. The downstairs, where the thermostat is, feels fine in the summer but freezing in the winter. We have a heat pump system, and I think it would be more efficient to run the furnace fan year round to better circulate the air, but my fiance thinks it would cost too much money to run the fan all the time. Who is right? How much energy does the fan really use?
It all depends on the size. But now a days fan are energy efficient. Lets address your real problem and that is the house not heating and cooling evenly. The system needs balanced so the house heats and cools properly. Find air duct dampers and shut off some of the air going up stairs and open the ones for the down stairs Each room should have control dampers if not they can be installed easily. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this then call a Contractor and have them balance the system. Good Luck!!
